The purpose of this paper is to list down how much it costs to initiate an online business and what are the costs required for running a site.

To set up an online business involves very little cost. But your costs increases as soon as your website starts growing in popularity. I have listed down the breakup of charges you'll incur while running a busy web based business.

In online business you need to be up-to-date to stay ahead. You need to read books and search other resources to gain more knowledge about your line of business, for doing this. Going through different presentation online and reading blogs will also make you well equipped with latest trend.

Your business' DUNS rating will impact how much credit you can have for your company and frankly, you should always try and develop your business credit separate from your personal credit. To accomplish this, you need the DUNS number and you also need to start building lines of credit for your company without making personal guarantees. The best way to achieve this is to start out small by borrowing a small sum of money from a local bank or credit union against a small cash deposit that you make into a business checking account. I suggest making 3-4 monthly payments on time and then pay the account off in full. You'll be surprised how quickly your small business will begin to get offers for everything from credit cards to signature lines of credit and/or equipment financing.

Separately, if you have any local vendors that you do business with, try getting them to extend you a small line of credit institutions and then urge them to report your payment history to the credit bureaus in the name of your business (not your personal name). I would do the same here as with the bank loan. Just get a small line of credit, make payments for 2-three months, and then pay the outstanding amount off. You will be surprised how quickly your business credit rating will improve and the offers you'll receive should exceed your needs.

All I will say for the time being about accepting credit cards is that it's a necessary business tool for most small businesses today. In regards to using credit cards for your company, I suggest that you keep your things and personal lines of credit separate, if at all possible. Use business credit cards for business purposes and use credit cards for their own use on your personal credit cards. I know that many of you'll say that this is difficult to do, but the sooner you build your business credit, the less you'll have a need for your personal credit cards to finance your business expenses.

This is but an example of the fact that business credit lines can be developed and/or used for your growing small businesses, of course. Furthermore, you'll learn over time that the better you develop and manage your business lines of credit separately from your personal credit, the more your corporation will be worth and the more successful you're likely to be.

As you begin to develop and/or expand your presence on the Internet for your business consider this: Developing and/or improving your business lines of credit is one of several important solutions to help jumpstart your online or offline business. However, you'll need to build more comprehensive strategies, since no one way will work for all businesses as you begin to create a customer base that you will be able then market to online on a regular basis. As stated earlier in this series, in order to rise above the crowd you'll need more than a website. Therefore, developing business credit lines in addition to implementing several Internet based solutions in the next twelve-24 months will be crucial to the long term success for virtually every small and local business in America.

I have included all the cost and hope answered your questions for how much does it cost to start an online business.

QUESTION: Can I get some creative ideas on a business I can start with low start up cost?
Business will be in Birmingham, Alabama
  • I am in Huntsville, Alabama and Ive started an home base business with very low start up cost and has been very profitable for my family. I am an on-line florist. I work from home. I also put flowers, plants, silks in places like mom and pop grocery stores at no charge to them then I pay them a 20% commission. I also put plants in restaurants and maintain them as well. I used my own refrigerator at first for fresh flowers. my own yard for plants. Freshen them up with a bow, plant glow cleaner and a new container. I took advantage of all Yahoo had to offer as far as free business websites and hosting. Within a few weeks I was link to other sites free of charge. I dedicated a phone line just for the business. I made business cards from my pc and every arrangement I send out has a business card on that arrangement. To clean my pc $0.00 cost, To set up my office $1.08 ( pack of highlighter, pen, paper clips, tacks, ect. from the Dollar Store.) Web sites were $0.00 with yahoo. Domain Name through Yahoo was $1.99 for a year. Business cards $18.00 enough to make 1000 cards. I made 50 at a time to save on ink. I use my paper on front side and back side then I shred it and use it for filler in baskets. Smiles thinking about it. My county liecence was $5.00 and my city liecense was $42.00. To start with I paid my taxes every 6 months. I use Microsoft Word which is on almost every XP pc and I use that for my accounting purposes. Again the cost was $0.00. To except credit card information use Element Solutions they dont charge you for your machine and has the lower points for every dollar you collect then most Ive delt with . All of which doesnt have to have a line of its own just a reqular phone line when you need to process. They also dont charge you for the terminal fees. I used our old refrigerator, as old as it was Id say the cost of it was around $50.00. Took the racks out and replace it with dollar store trash cans which cost $4.32 . As far as ribbon and such I bought those from an on-line company as well. Balloons and such too. If you have children then its great when it comes time to deliver then take the kids with you. I took my grand daughter to school and her brothers would go with me to make my deliveries . The money I saved on store fronts and other expenses ect.. I used to change our home existence. I paid off old debts. Ive paid off all our vehicles. Every appliance in the house is new and upgraded. I have enough home business from neighbors, family, friends, that know I do this and this week Im doing weddings. Keep fresh plants in beautiful containers through out your house even on the tables. Thats your best advertisement. Ive even had the cable men , church women ect see the work then they know where they can come get fresh cut arrangments ect.... I keep cards with me if Im at the bank, grocery store, other business I leave a stack. On Saturdays I take an arrangment to the church along with my card and I leave it free of charge. I run 7 days a week. If I have flowers to sell Im selling them. If you dont think this is the business for you then if you need flowers we send flowers any where in the world! God Bless

FAQ's: I want to become a financial planner. How much of my first few years will be spent doing sales?
I like the counseling, math and presentation (I have a PhD in physics) aspects of financial planning but I'm put off by the idea that I'll spend the first few years at a national company desperately trying to build a client base -- asking my relatives to sign up, cold calling, etc. Is this a standard aspect of financial planning?
  • A "financial consultant" in most of the companies today is just a glorified name for a salesperson. You are responsible for your own clients, and growing and expanding the client base. Yes, it could be lucrative, but you are required to add more clients every quarter, so your job as salesperson never ends. You will be doing cold calling and prospecting as long as you are in the profession.

  • Yes, and it never ends. You always have to maintain and expand your client base. People drop off and you have to replace them.

  • 100% of being a financial planner is selling financial products to retain your client base. If you enjoy the background analysis part of the job, explore becoming an actuary instead.

  • If you're one of those academic types and want to do analysis work, then forget it. Don't go into this field. You'll hate it. I did for one year and couldn't make two consecutive quotas w/in a 6 month period and was released by my former employer. I changed my profession to being an accountant. I'd rather be in finance, but accounting is a better fit for me. Financial planners that make a lot of money need not be good in finance, but are very good salespeople.

At what point do you confidently say that you are an expert in your own business? Something always comes up, that makes you realize how much you still have to learn.
This is how I was able to keep my crafts business afloat, knowing
that I am a constant learner in the business field, even though I am
already extremely confident with my skills and products. Everyday, is
still a new chance to learn.
